Put your damp hair in braids and give your hair a break from the heat products to create this laissez-faire, It Girl look.

We loved the jet-set, gorgeous bounce of the hair at Balmain. The barely-there waves endowed the models with a healthy hair look that would make Serena Van Der Woodsen proud. Jill Stuart’s Woodstock look was covetably bohemian.

At Bottega Veneta, glitzy clips held the tousled hair back, proving that the contrast between flowing hair and chunky jewels is downright tempting. Christopher Kane contrasted lacey couture with shoulder-length waves that oozed natural movement. Salvatore Ferragamopaired electric neon eyeliner with contrasting messy waves.

We loved the look on Bella Hadid at Jason Wu – it was art school babe meets seductive groupie. At Coach, the style got a messy, tangled gothic makeover, proving that this is the look du jour for girls who embrace the mystery and dark magic of the colder months.

They are one of the simplest, most down-to-earth hairstyles but they also betray a quiet self confidence that other looks struggle to achieve. We like to consider them effortless luxury.

They are just as at home on a Hamptons patio as they are on the opulent streets of downtown Paris. The season saw the center part styled with relaxed and tousled long hair for a laid-back glam feel.

We loved the Seventies bohemian locks at Jonathan Simkhai, where hair was unusually roped in by a thin choker. Luxury earth babe locks stole the show at Tory Burch. At Christopher Kane, models rocked the center part trend while also nailing the natural dark brown, textured trends of the season.

#4. Intricate Braids

Braids have a romantic, ethereal, storybook appeal. There is something timelessly feminine and alluring about them. Though they range in complexity from the super simple to the calculus-esque challenging, braids have a bohemian edge that is in high demand come September.

At Simone Rocha, a delicately romantic Victorian era braid was arrestingly feminine and beautifully crafted. At Alexander McQueen, braids were long and Amazonian.

Jil Sander’s futuristic robot babe braids were totally unusual and captivating! We love that the classic braid is still undergoing a constant evolution and being constantly reimagined.

#5. Side-Swept Bangs

For women who want it both ways, the fall 2018 hairstyle trends bring good news: side-swept bangs are in. There’s a lot to love about this face-framing favorite: it is versatile, urbane, and contemporary. Side-swept bangs allow you to play with proportions to create facial contours, symmetry, and angles.

Side-swept bangs are privy to endless variations and can be pinned back for a romantic pouf or braided to the side for a winter gypsy feel. Shaggy side-swept bangs exude a laid-back, Sunday morning feel, while sleekly straightened ones are professional world ready.

We liked the tightly styled side bang look at Dries van Noten – it was no-nonsense urbanity at its best. At Fendi, models wore bobs paired with a side-swept bang for a breezy, face-framing effect. At Sacai, the wind-whipped look had a ‘just off the ski hill’ appeal and looked delightfully carefree on model of the moment Kaia Gerber (Cindy Crawford’s model daughter!).

#6. Teased Rockabilly Pouf

For the experimental among us, the teased pouf of the fall 2018 hairstyle trends was one of the most fresh and exciting revelations of the season. The teased pouf has a rockabilly feel: perfect for a down and dirty rock and roll motorcycle queen who hangs out at roadside bars late into the night.

Another key fall 2018 hairstyle trend in the effortless beauty movement that swept the runway was the unstyled, free falling midi bob look. The look, which is not quite a bob and not quite a shoulder-length hairstyle, is down to earth, playful and intriguingly irreverent. It has uncontrived uptown girl energy to it.

Ports 1961 sent the models down the runway with prep school bobs, topped off with a laissez-faire center part. Alberta Ferretti sent a nearly identical iteration down the runway, light brown hair and all.

This is yet another look that echoes the effortless and breezy mood of the fall/ winter 2018-2019 hairstyle trends. Designers tossed their brushes aside and embraced a messy and couldn’t-be-bothered attitude for the colder months. As lazy gals ourselves, we must admit that one less step in our morning routine is always a welcome change.

Mussed up, tangled hair was popular on runways on both sides of the Atlantic because it evokes a mood of carefree playfulness. Only the truly confident would pair their thoughtful fall outfits with a knotty hair look. The result is appealingly fun and rebellious.

We loved the tangled, greasy looking locks at Marni, where models treated us to a desirable indifference. At Max Mara, a messy ponytail look was positively tangled and had a deviously sexy ‘don’t care’ feel. At Cividini, hair shot off in all angles in a relaxed manner.

#9. Not Boring Chignons & Chignon Hybrids

Chignons are classy, timeless, elegant. But… fun? Not generally. For the fall/ winter 2018-2019 hairstyle trends, that tradition was blurred with designers offering up an array of creative and artistic chignon looks.

The chignon is perfect for all occasions, from a morning meeting to an upscale dinner date. But why not invite some innovation into your hair look with a simple yet effective twist?

At Philosophy, models went down the runways with a twisted, knotted rope-inspired bun, replete with a straggly pony. The effect was a quietly enigmatic look. At Palmer Harding, we saw one of the most innovative looks of the season: a sculptural twisted pony that was a veritable study of shape, movement, and contours.

Giorgio Armani sent a complex, long pony-chignon hybrid down the runway with hair ties galore and an appealing, circular shape. At Sportmax, a knotted chignon felt fresh, cutting-edge, and slightly rebellious.

The messy bun is timeless. It is like the red lipstick of the hair world: reliable, appealing, and ubiquitous! The messy bun is more fun than its straight-laced cousins for a couple of reasons. First, its appeal lies in its utility: just grab a hair tie, sans mirror, and let the magic happen. Secondly, it helps foster an aura of studied and thoughtful effortlessness.

Even if it did in fact take you twenty minutes in front of a mirror, its appeal lies in its imperfect perfection. Pair with sunglasses and pearl earrings for a prep-school perfect silhouette.

Chanel’s high messy bun was an original way of wearing the style. We loved how the neat, slicked back hair descends into a messy and piecey top knot – a tempting contrast. At Carolina Herrera, messy buns got a complex makeover with a detailed pin-up configuration and strategic tangles.

#11. Wet and Wild

So this fall 2018 hairstyle trend was unexpected. This season, designers threw caution to the wind and took a dive into the ocean. Or at least, that’s what it looked like with models strutting down the runways donning sleek, wet-looking locks. Whether it was excessive hair gel or H2O, the best hair of the runway looked slick; like it had just gone through the washer.

The damp hair look is one of those ‘why didn’t anyone think of that earlier’ hair trends. We are always so committed to blow-drying, straightening, curling, and primping our hair that the very act seems like a ritual-one that must be maintained. But the fall/ winter 2018-2019 hairstyle trends beg the question: what if fresh outta the shower hair is… cool, neigh, desirable?

We loved the piecey feel of the hair at Rochas. Was it damp or was it just styled that way? The mystery is the appeal!

At Emilia Wickstead, hair stuck off in unconventional directions and the piecey wet hair kept the look edgy and glossy. At Prada, hair looked freshly washed and had a futuristic beach goddess feel.

At Jil Sander, piecey hair was super soaked. At Emilio Pucci, a curved fringe looked like it had been soaked in water and left to dry on the go.

The mood of the fall/ winter 2018-2019 hairstyle trends can be encompassed in a feel good message: your natural hair is perfect, your natural hair is beautiful. Designers from Paris to New York embraced the natural texture of the models’ hair: be it thin and straight or kinda frizzy.

This texture appreciation day was appreciated. It seems to suggest that the fashion world is accepting the appeal of the everywoman. We need not all have flowing Gisele locks to be beautiful. This season demonstrated that the ability to own your natural hair belies an appealing self-possession that is indeed much sexier than eternally curating your real look.

At Tommy Hilfiger, models let their natural, crimped waves dance freely as they walked. At Etro, loose, mussed up waves lent the models an edgier-than-thou appeal. At Coach, wavy crimped hair conjured up images of self-possessed Wild West saloon girls.

Like its cousin ‘wet hair’ trend, the slicked back look was unexpectedly lust-worthy. While we admit, the hyper-sleek style doesn’t flatter all face shapes or aesthetics, when it does work, it works well.

It lends your look decisiveness, full-frontal confidence bordering on vampy aggression. It announces to the world that you are here – don’t be surprised if people move out of your way as you walk.

The super slick ponytail or bun complements an urbane-industrial wardrobe of leather, blacks, and minimalist fare. That being said, the look is an unexpected chameleon and also does some of its best work when paired with opulent chandelier earrings and a vampy evening dress.

One of the best examples of this fall 2018 hairstyle trend was the vixen-esque slicked back, center-parted hair at Brandon Maxwell. At Richard Malone, hair was slicked back across the whole length, creating a futuristic woman in charge feel.

At Alexander McQueen, hair gel was no object, and ponies were tightly slicked back to create a daring and provocative look.

Ponytails are timeless. They offer us a bit of everything: sass, glamour, sophistication, athleticism, and playfulness. Ponytails are like the upscale running shoe of the fashion world: comfortable, familiar, and endlessly trendy.

We loved the low pony at Valentino – it was polished yet dreamy. At Mark Fast, models wore polished and elegant ponytails that were Gossip Girl perfect. Pair with pearls and sunglasses for a paparazzi dodging silhouette.

The neat and sophisticated feel continued at House of Holland, where ponytails were sleek and sartorially enviable.

#15. Volume and Movement

Related to the tousled wave trend, the voluminous hair trend for fall 2018 serves as a good alternative to the hyper-slicked back hair that rocked the runway. ‘The more body the better’ was the motto of this trend.

Voluminous, flowing hair is both beyond feminine and seductively suggestive. We love how hair with extra body creates a bombshell, Victoria’s Angel feel. It looks preternaturally polished with cozy fall clothing and flirtatiously alluring when paired with a tight dress for the evening.

We loved the wavy, gently voluminous look at Isabel Marant. At Moschino, retro ‘60s hair had movement, density, and volume. This version of the look is perfect for women who want to embrace an old school approach come September. It is sexy without being overtly provocative.

At Michael Kors, models walked down the runway with a subtler, but no less impactful, version of the trend. Their healthy, shimmering hair danced as they walked. At Adeam, glistening, bouncy hair was the theme of the day.
